Sundays - what else but Roasts....?

I remember one of my always favourite places in London, many years ago.
It was called "Lyons Corner House" - traditionally we always went to the one in the Strand, opposite Trafalgar square, because they had a half-a-dozen different restaurants under the one roof, and our favourite was generally the "Carvery" because of the price!
It cost a generous 1 guinea at the time, in otherwords 1 pound and 1 shilling, per person, which gave it, and others, the name of "Guinea Piggy".....
For this price, you were served with a choice of excellent starters, then you went up to the "Carving Bar" yourself, and you carved what you wanted from a choice of 6 (!) different roasted meats. Vegetables, sauces and gravies were available - just serve yourself.
The wonderful thing was that you could go back - as many times as you wished, and we did! There was a wonderful assortment of cold buffet, cold meats and salad items available as well.
Now this was in the days before they started making economies, and started having a "Chef" who carved for you....can you imagine..."Guinea Piggies" all of us, I always had at least 3 helpings of different ones, then finished off with some cold meats and salads......and - they were all, always - DELICIOUS!
I don't think they exist anymore, a great shame.
After you had fully stuffed yourself to almost bursting point, you were required to select from an extensive list of desserts, thank goodness they didn't have rice pudding on there!
The whole thing was wrapped up by a very good coffee.
All you really needed was a bed in the corner.
The only time I ever saw someone NOT make a guinea piggy of himself was under strange circumstances...the door had opened and a "large" gentleman entered - sideways - (he was too large to enter in the normal fashion)!
We were certain - this was going to be BANKRUPTCY for the Carvery.......
Imagine - this Gentleman partook of a meagre soup, followed by one cold chicken leg and some green salad, followed by an ice!
One visit - no more - maybe he couldn't walk too far, but we were astounded, and the staff were visibly relieved!
All this just to remind you that it's Sunday....... Roast day.....!
Bonne Appétit....
